Craig Bottomley, a lawyer representing the alleged president of the Toronto chapter of the Hells Angels, is filing a lawsuit to challenge the standard of the meals.
He is asking a judge to order his client, John Neal, be provided with more nutritious food to eat and drink when his October 22. trial.
Bottomley argues that it’s impossible for his client to focus on defending himself if he’s hungry.
The Toronto Police Service is responsible for prisoner’s meals. Each meal costs $1.19.
A typical lunch meal consists of a sandwich, often cheese and a glass of water mixed with flavour crystals. Vegetarians are often served a piece of lettuce and tomato on a hamburger bun.
